Backup Storage for your dedicated server

Activate the included 500 GB backup target, restrict network access, size retention correctly and prove that data can be restored.

Public guideReviewed 2026-09-02
01

Activate the storage

Activate Included Backup Storage under Backups and save the generated credentials in an approved password manager. Activation creates an empty 500 GB target; it does not select data, schedule a job or verify a restore. Configure those steps in the backup software running on the server.

02

Grant the minimum network access

Allow only the source IP or block that will send or retrieve backups and enable only the required protocol: FTP, NFS or CIFS/SMB. Replace old access rules when a backup host changes.

  • Use a single-host /32 rule when only one public IPv4 address needs access.
  • Rotate the storage password after an administrator change or suspected disclosure.
  • Do not remove the storage service until every required recovery copy exists elsewhere.
03

Size capacity and retention

Estimate the protected data, daily change rate, backup frequency and retention before adding 1 TB, 5 TB or 10 TB capacity. Allow room for growth and at least one overlapping full backup. Check the recurring price and contract period before completing an expansion order.

04

Test restoration

Run a backup, restore a representative file and then perform a controlled workload restore to an isolated location. Verify ownership, permissions, application consistency and elapsed recovery time. Repeat the test after changing backup software, encryption, retention or credentials.
